Can ChatGPT read home services websites? We checked 3,000.

More homeowners now ask ChatGPT, Claude or Google's AI who to call. Those tools read websites to write their answers. So we checked 3,000 home services websites the way many of them do: we fetched each homepage without running JavaScript and looked at what was there to read.

More than half

of the homepages that loaded, gave AI tools no business facts written for machines (no business schema).

More than 1 in 3

had no structured data of any kind.

Nearly 9 in 100

showed almost no text until JavaScript ran.

What we checked

We drew 3,000 websites at random from home services businesses across the US in October 2026. For each one we loaded the homepage the plain way, with no JavaScript, and checked two things: whether it carried business facts in a form machines can read (structured data naming the business, such as LocalBusiness), and how much text was on the page before any script ran. 2,635 homepages loaded; the figures below are out of those.

More than half give AI nothing structured to read

1,395 of 2,635 homepages, 52.9%, had no business schema. That means no machine-readable name, phone, address, services or service area, only text and pictures an AI tool has to interpret on its own.

52.9% OF 2,635 HOMEPAGES: NO BUSINESS SCHEMA

Some sites are almost blank without JavaScript

233 homepages, 8.8%, showed fewer than 500 characters of text before JavaScript ran. A person sees a full page. A tool that doesn't run JavaScript sees a header and not much else.

Many AI tools don't run JavaScript. If your words only appear after it runs, this is what they get.

Trades with fewer homepages in the sample are not shown. Small samples, so read the order loosely.

What this means for your business

Structured business facts are not a guarantee that any AI tool will name you. Nobody can promise that. But they remove guesswork: your name, phone, services and service area, stated plainly where a machine can find them. And if your words only appear after JavaScript runs, some tools may never see them at all.

  • Check that your homepage states your business name, phone, services and the areas you serve in plain text.
  • Add business structured data (LocalBusiness or a more specific type for your trade).
  • Load your site with JavaScript turned off and see what is left.
  • Ask ChatGPT and Claude who they recommend for your trade in your city, and note who they name.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT read my website?

It depends on how your site is built. If your business facts and page text are in the page itself, AI tools can read them. If they only appear after JavaScript runs, some tools may not see them.

What is business schema?

Structured data in your page's code that states your business name, phone, address, services and service area in a format machines read reliably. LocalBusiness is the most common type.

Does adding schema get me named by ChatGPT?

Nobody can promise that. It makes your facts easier to read; it does not guarantee a mention.

How was this study done?

We picked 3,000 home services websites at random in October 2026, fetched each homepage without running JavaScript, and checked for business schema and visible text. 2,635 homepages loaded and are counted.

Sample of 3,000 home services websites drawn at random on October 30, 2026; 2,635 homepages returned a page and are the base for every figure. Homepage HTML only, fetched without JavaScript. Schema added by JavaScript is not counted, because a tool that does not run JavaScript cannot see it either.
